Mr. Pop Culture | Exploring the World of Pop Culture Pop culture is everywhere. You know it when you come to the Internet, listen to music, watch television, app-gaming or go to a movie, concert, or stage show. You know the artists, the actors and actresses, sports personalities and the games they play. Today, anything with a buzz is deemed pop culture. The book definition says pop culture is a collection of thoughts, ideas, attitudes, perspectives, images (you name it) preferred by the mainstream population, which is a sort of common denominator. The most common pop culture categories are entertainment (movies, music, TV), sports, news (as in people/places in news), politics, fashion/clothes, and technology. Slang has also become popular in our culture as each year seems to have its own slang signature, especially with tweens and teens. Terms such as "going viral" are new pop culture – not only the term but the viral product itself. Each one of us has our own pop-culture menu. Look at your apps, your bookmarks, your songs playlist, TV shows, movies: what you 're saying on your favorite social networks. Smartphones today are the center of your pop culture. If you want to know more about pop culture, read on as we are going to give you its history and different definitions. History of Pop Culture It was in the 19th century when the term "popular culture" was coined. Traditionally, it was associated with poor education and with the lower classes, which is the opposite of the "official culture" and higher education of the upper classes. During the Victorian-era, Britain experienced social changes with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, which caused an increase in literacy rates. And with the growth of capitalism and industrialization, people started spending their money on entertainment, such as sports and the commercial idea of pubs. Reading also gained traction, and the Penny serials were published. These were cheap popular serial literature in the United Kingdom. Those were like the Victorian equivalent of video games. It was the first taste of mass-produced popular culture for the young in Britain. With the growing consumer culture and increased capacity for travel via the newly built railway that opened in 1825 in north-east England, a market for cheap popular literature was created with an ability to distribute on a large scale. With this, the first Penny serials were published in the 1830s due to the growing demand. Towards the end of the 19th century, the stress in the distinction from "official culture" became more pronounced. It is a usage that became established by the interbellum period or the period between wars. The meaning of popular culture began to be connected with those of mass culture, consumer culture, media culture, image culture, and culture for mass consumption from the end of World War II, following major cultural and social changes, which were brought by mass media innovations. The abbreviated form "pop" for popular, like in pop music, dates back from the late 1950s. Although not used in our lexicon back then, modern pop culture (as we know it) began with the baby boomer generation and "buying power." As boomers came of age with their disposable incomes – that influence led to the pop culture revolution. It began during the 1950s with rock n' roll, TV, Dick Clark and the hoola hoop, transistor radios, into the 1960s and beyond. The term "pop culture" became mainstream during the 1980s. Before this, we used "popular" to describe things such as top song playlists or "pop" as in art or "best" or "top" selling, as in books. Different Definitions of Pop Culture Based on the author of Cultural Theory and Popular Culture named John Storey, popular culture has different definitions. The quantifiable definition of culture has the problem that much "high culture", such as television dramatizations of Jane Austen, is also "popular." Aside from that, "pop culture" is also defined as the culture that is "leftover" when we have decided what high culture is. But many works overlap the boundaries, such as William Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, and Charles Dickens. The third definition of pop culture associates it with "mass culture" and ideas. This is seen as a commercial culture, which is mass-produced for mass consumption by mass media. If you take it from a Western European viewpoint, this can be compared to American culture. Pop culture can also be defined otherwise as an authentic culture of the people. However, this can be challenging because there are a lot of ways to define the "people." According to John Storey, popular culture emerged from the urbanization of the Industrial Revolution. For example, studies of Shakespeare locate much of the characteristic vitality of his drama in its participation in Renaissance popular culture. Other examples are contemporary practitioners like Dario Fo and John McGrath, who use popular culture in a sense that links to ancient folk traditions. Folk culture is at the opposite end of one spectrum from mass culture. As mentioned earlier, mass culture is mass-produced and mass-marketed on a large societal scale. Folk culture, on the other hand, is typically crafted individually, and it is produced and distributed on a local level. This can include folk art, folk music, folk crafts, and folklore. They usually originate from small, regional, or local groups of people, and are considered as representing only those small groups, and are propagating by word of mouth and not via mass media. Pop Culture Through the Decades Pop Culture is like a unifying bridge across time, which brings together generations of diverse backgrounds. Whether looking at the rock 'n' roll revolution of the 1960s or the thriving social networking websites of today, each period in America's cultural history develops its own exceptional take on the qualities that define our lives. Here's an overview of the pop culture from the 1950s to the 2010s: The 1950s Pop Culture The 1950s were a decade marked by the post-World War II boom. Technology in the 1950s When it comes to technology, the 1950s was a crucial period, especially in the world of radio and television. It has brought about the advancement in the viewing and listening experience of people at home. This decade was a breakthrough year for television. Technology in the 1970s The 1970s was a prime period for television because a lot of manufacturers tried to push the boundaries of color TV to produce better reception and clearer resolution. But aside from television, computers also had a significant advancement in this decade. It is because of the introduction to the Xerox PARC, which was the first computer that was designed to support an operating system or OS based on a graphical user interface. This computer would later become the inspiration behind some of the most iconic computers in the history of technology. It was also in this same decade when Microsoft was formed by Bill Gates and researcher Paul Allen. Another important creation in the 1970s was the Universal Product Code or UPC. It allowed systematic pricing and tracking for products in grocery stores and other establishments. The first product to be UPC scanned was a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum in Ohio. If you're craving to know more about the technologies invented and introduced in the 1970s, then you should read our 1970s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1980s The 1980s, when it comes to technology, has been a great decade for the computer and the music industry. Both of these fields have benefitted from the technological advancements brought by engineers and scientists who wanted to make life more convenient. It was in the 80s when Bill Gates agreed to provide the operating system for IBM's personal computer. That operating system was the PC DOS 1.0, which was modified to be compatible with the IBM Personal Computer. Aside from that, this decade was also important for the creation of the internet. Tim Berners-Lee, a previous independent contractor at CERN, started experimenting on improving the communication between researchers from different places. His experimentation led to ENQUIRE, which was a software project that serves as the predecessor for the World Wide Web. Aside from these, many other developments for the computer were introduced in the 1980s. Some of these include the creation of Apple computers, Macintosh personal computer, and the introduction of the Power Windows by Microsoft. To know more about these, you can read our 1980s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1990s The 1990s has been a turning point in the computer industry. This decade brought major technological advancements to the personal computer. Aside from that, it also showed how Microsoft became a powerhouse in the world of software. At the start of the decade, Adobe Inc. released the Adobe Photoshop 1.0 software. It was a graphics editor programmed by Thomas Knoll. The third iteration of the Windows OS, Windows 3.0, was also released by Microsoft in the 1990s, together with a new presentation program called Microsoft PowerPoint, bundled with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. The World Wide Web was also formed after Tim Berners-Lee utilized and tweaked the ENQUIRE system. This was considered to be the first web browser. The first Pentium chip was also released in this decade by the Inter Corporation. It would eventually include some of their best-selling microprocessors. In 1994, Amazon was launched by Jeff Bezos, and would eventually become one of the biggest companies in the world. In the same year, Sony released its first home video game console, the PlayStation, first in Japan, and in the US after a year. There are many other wonderful technological creations that were introduced in the 1990s. If you are curious about them, read our 1990s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 2000s When it comes to technology, the 2000s was a groundbreaking decade. It was the time where certain inventions have revolutionized the different sectors of technology, such as web browsing, gaming, and as well as mobile communications. Before the year 2000 came, people were afraid of the Y2K Problem. This was a proposed event wherein computers may not be able to handle the change from 1999 to 2000 because of an error in the algorithm. With this, people believed there would be a collapse in the economy as most companies and agencies rely on computers. Fortunately, a lot of organizations were able to upgrade their computer systems, which eliminated the threat. This decade was great for gaming because Sony released the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3, while Microsoft launched the Xbox and the Xbox 360. People also had a new way to listen to music when Apple Inc. successfully launched iTunes, which was a media player and library. After that, Apple also released the first-generation iPod. During these times, Google was becoming a big company, but Yahoo was still at the top as the number one search engine in the world. There are also media services providers who were experiencing a rise in profits, and one of those is Netflix. It was also in the 2000s when YouTube was established. There are many other innovations that were introduced in the 2000s. If you want to know more about them, read our 2000s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 2010s The 2010s decade was not as impactful as the previous decades when it comes to technology, but there were still a few breakthroughs that have been introduced. At the start of the decade, Apple was already selling over 250 million Apple iPods. Google, on the other hand, started expanding its business when they announced that they'd be selling their own mobile phones. Social media has been prevalent in the 2010s, and Facebook has surpassed Google when it comes to website visits per year. But Facebook eventually found its competitors when Instagram and Pinterest were launched in the same year. In the world of mobile phones, the 4G broadband cellular network became popular. Cloud services were also becoming popular in 2011. With this, Apple released its own Cloud service called iCloud. But it was also in the same year when Apple's co-founder, Steve Jobs, passed away. In the gaming industry, Sony released the PlayStation 4 in 2013and eventually became the second best-selling video game console of all time next to PlayStation 2. There are many other developments in technology that have been done in the 2010s, aside from what we've mentioned here. To know more about them, read our 2010s Technology News In Review. FifteenEightyFour | Cambridge University Press | The Official Blog of Cambridge University Press It's a robust finding that people react differently to meat depending on how it is labeled. In well-known experiments subjects rated ground beef that was 25% lean as both higher quality and significantly less greasy than ground beef labeled as 75% fat. And then in follow-up studies when subjects were actually given samples to taste, the lean meat was preferred.

FASHION BOSS | Fashion | Travel | Lifestyle | By Lorna Duffy My sister and I escaped to the sunny South East for a mini getaway two weeks ago and we had the nicest time. 48 hours away from the hustle and bustle of city life is always a good idea and Wexford seemed liked the perfect place. Here's what we got up in the Ancient East... ACCOMMODATIONh We stayed in the Brandon House Hotel for two nights. It is a four star hotel located in the heart of New Ross. A great spot as we were close to pretty much everything which was so handy. We were treated to a bottle of bubbly and some sweet treats on arrival (a lovely way to end a fun first day in Wexford). Our room was modern and spacious. It had a flat screen TV, bathrobes and slippers as well as bottled water and wine on arrival. The staff were lovely and they really went out of their way to accommodate us. There was a lot of choice for breakfast each morning and the leisure facilities were great too. We will definitely be back to try a few treatments at the spa next time. A really enjoyable stay overall. WINING & DINING Le Baginbun - The nicest little lunch spot in Fethard. Le Baginbun is the sister property of Baginbun Lodge which is only across the road. They had lots of choice on their lunch menu so we were spoilt for choice. We shared a falafel starter (I have never had nicer falafels) and I have a chicken salad for my main. Really tasty dishes and generous portions too. A cosy atmosphere and the staff were really friendly too. Click here to see their menu. The Gallery Restaurant - this restaurant is part of the hotel we were staying in so it was a perfect spot for our first night as we checked in late that evening. The menu had a really good choice of both traditional and modern cuisine so we were spoilt for choice. I ordered a steak dinner and we shared a chocolate dessert. The food was cooked to perfection, the atmosphere was cosy and the staff were really friendly. A really nice dining room and the bar had a good selection of drinks too. The staff very kindly whipped us up two margaritas on the spot as they weren't on the menu. We also got chatting to a few of the bar staff. Such lovely people. Click here for more on their menu selection. Creacon Wellness Retreat - the perfect destination for retreat, relaxation and rejuvenation. We popped in for some R&R on our first day and we had the nicest lunch. The Master Chef, Gaetano Pernagallo designs meals that promote health and nutrition. They only use quality ingredients that are chosen for their seasonal & environmental appropriateness – many of which are grown in their own gardens. I ordered a chicken burger with sweet potato fries and a salad - they really hit the spot. The staff were also lovely. Click here for more on their menu. Il Primo Italian Restaurant - We dined in Il Primo on our last night. Italian food is a favourite of mine and the food did not disappoint. I had a really nice smoked salmon pasta dish with a glass of red. It was a beautiful meal overall and the restaurant was only a 5 minute drive from our hotel which was handy. If you're staying in New Ross this place is worth checking out. Click here for more. THINGS TO DO & SEE Dunbrody Famine Ship Our first stop on the Saturday was the Dunbrody Famine Ship. This is one of the premier tourist attractions in the South East of Ireland so we had to pop in for a tour. Centred on an authentic reproduction of an 1840's emigrant vessel, it provides a world-class interpretation of the famine emigrant experience. Incorporating guided tour, costumed performers and themed exhibitions, 'The Dunbrody' provides a unique insight into the bravery and fortitude with which Irish people faced up to a desperate situation. Our tour guide was really friendly, chatty and informative, we got to see the ins and outs of the ship and the performers topped it all off. A really enjoyable tour overall. The tickets are reasonably priced too. Click here for more information on tours and ticket prices. Hook Lighthouse Located at the tip of the Hook peninsula, this is the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. We popped in for a guided tour of the lighthouse on the Sunday morning as we were in the area. Our tour was just under an hour long and our tour guide Gillian was full of facts and figures so we learnt a lot. We were given a tour of even level of the lighthouse and we finished up at the top with the most beautfil view of Wexford and the cliff tops. An absolute must if you're in the area. Click here for more information. Sea Cave Kayaking The Irish Experience offers an amazing and unique Sea Cave Kayaking Experience along the beautiful South East coastline of Ireland, taking in the very best Atlantic Ocean location of Ireland's Ancient East. Sea Cave Kayaking had been on my to-do list for a good while so I couldn't wait to get going. It really was a unique and exhilarating way to explore this magical coastline. The sea cave kayaking experience was 3 hours long and this included 2.5 hours of paddle time in total. The sea caves and arches really were something else. We also stopped off at a hidden beach to re-energise. Our guide Graham taught us lots about the area, the wildlife and the history which was great. We were also treated to a hot chocolate and a snack along the way. The weather was perfect so the views were even more incredible than expected. Costa Del Wexford to say the least. Click here for more information. Energy Therapy I decided to give energy therapy a go as I had never tried it before. I had my first Rising Star treatment at Creacon Wellness Retreat after lunch on the Saturday and I really enjoyed it. It was a 40 minute session in total and I found it really relaxing overall. Scientists have proven that everything is energy. With humans and animals, energy fields operate inside our bodies (chakra system) and outside our bodies (auric system). When our energetic vibration decreases, dis-ease and imbalance can occur on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. The Rising Star treatment works by directing energy through your chakra system, working on the five elements; fire, water, air, earth and ether, so your entire being can start to balance and heal. A single treatment starts to raise the vibration of the human energy field, to hold more life force energy, so it can rebalance the body. A really enjoyable experience. I will definitely be back. Click here for more information. County Wexford really does have so much to offer. There are so many things to do and places to see. A huge thanks to Brandon House Hotel, The Irish Experience, Hook Lighthouse, Dunbrody Famine Ship, Creacon Wellness Retreat, Le Baginbun and Il Primo for having us. Such an enjoyable weekend in the sun south east. Any questions? You can catch me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

Home Solution Expert | Home Improvement Services Unfortunately a fact of modern living is that we are, all too often, affected by the noise of our neighbours, traffic and even the other people living in our home. Modern houses are particularly prone to noise pollution as the walls are thinner than older properties and they are often packed in more tightly together within the street. We also have a lot more apartments or flats than ever before, which again means that we are literally living on top of one another. However, you shouldn't have to put up with high levels of noise pollution in your daily life. We all deserve to be in a place that is peaceful and where we can shut out the rest of the world when we want to. How can we make our room quieter? Is it possible to make our rooms more soundproof? You will be happy to know that there are a lot of things you can do to help reduce the noise in your living space. Some are simple and cost little to nothing to implement and others may require a bit of an investment. It all depends on the level of noise you are suffering with, whether you want a long-term fixed solution or if you are just temporarily trying to patch up the problem. If you are renting, for example, you may not want to invest in soundproofing systems. Identify the source of the noise This may sound simple, but identifying the source and type of noise is important in understanding how to reduce it. It may be that you are hearing footsteps from the room above you, or perhaps it is the neighbours TV. You may be disturbed by the humdrum of traffic that just seems to reverberate throughout your home. Locating the source of the noise will help you to know where you need to place your soundproofing. Listen to where it is the loudest as this will be the area you need to cover. If it is more of a general sound vibration, then you will need to take steps to soundproof the whole room. How does sound travel? There are two types of sound, airborne and vibration. Airborne sounds are the noises you hear from people talking, the noise of car engines etc. Vibrational sounds come from the bass of music, footsteps, traffic vibrating on the roads and any banging noise. Sound bounces off of hard surfaces at the same angle that it hits it. This means that wherever the sound is coming in from, you need to break that reflection point to stop it from travelling around the room. Sound is a vibration, the only way to reduce it is to reduce the area it can reverberate. For example, if you have a neighbour who is playing their stereo on the other side of your wall, the sound is travelling through that wall and will keep going until it hits the wall on the other side. Unless you deaden that sound by placing something against the wall to stop it, or by interfering with the sound before it reaches the other wall causing the echo. All sound energy builds up unless it is interrupted. While you won't be able to completely soundproof your room, you can minimise the impact and reduce the noise significantly with a few simple steps. 5 easy ways to help reduce noise in your room: Rugs and soundproofing underlay Rugs and carpeting will not help with airborne sounds such as traffic noise or talking, but they can help with the vibrational sounds. So if you have a child whose footsteps you can hear from downstairs, or you have a neighbour complaining that they can hear you, a rug or soundproof underlay can help. Rugs/carpets and underlay will also help to soften the sounds generally vibrating around your room as they help to absorb those vibrations. Acoustic underlay and high density mats are an effective way of reducing vibrational noise between floors. Add in soft furnishings You may find that simply adding in some extra soft furnishings will help to reduce the way the sound travels around your room. Play around with your decor to see what works for you. Hanging tapestries, canvass paintings and even wallpaper can help to reduce the sound vibration. Use soft throws, think about the placement of your sofa etc. A bookcase strategically placed against a noisy wall can help to deaden the noise bleeding in from another room. It is always best to try and place heavier furnishings against the adjoining walls and the outside walls to help the interruption of the sound vibration. You can also buy noise reducing curtains, but make sure that the windows themselves are properly sealed before investing. It may be that all you need to do is improve the gaps around the window. Doors Doors are often overlooked as a source of noise bleeding through. But the type of door you have will have an impact on the sound that can travel through it. A lot of modern homes have hollow doors which allow sound to easily travel through them. A solid wooden door or a soundproof door will help prevent this immediately. Make sure there are no gaps around or under the door by fitting weather stripping. You can also hang heavy blankets on the doors to help deaden sound as a temporary measure. Soundproof panelling This one is a more involved solution, but there are many different types of soundproof panelling available. You can create a panel as part of your decor and have it fitted over your existing walls and doors. Or you may want to integrate the acoustic panelling into the plasterboard, if you are building a new home for example. Acoustic panels are available as fabric covered boards that you can hang on your walls to help to stop the noise from bouncing off them. They work by absorbing the sound vibrations. Ceiling panels If you are the unfortunate person who has a noisy neighbour above you who won't cover their wooden floors, then you may need to soundproof your ceiling to prevent that noise pollution. Again there are different types of ceiling panels available. You can integrate the noise stop panels into your ceiling system, creating a new false ceiling. Or you can, as with the walls, lay acoustic panels over the top of your existing ceiling. There are many designs of fabric to choose from to cover the wall and the ceiling panels with. You are not limited on colour or texture, so it is easy to find something that will work with your interior design. For more ideas and help with your soundproofing solutions, why not contact one of our friendly team today.
